Glamping accommodation opens at Bush Oasis Caravan Park

Major redevelopment at Townsville van park.

A long-held dream is slowly being realised for tourism business operator Fiona Lidgett and husband Martin.

In 2014, the couple bought Bush Oasis Caravan Park at Nome, 17km south of Townsville, and were looking forward to some stability for themselves and their children after many years moving around the country while Martin was in the Australian Defence Force.

Fiona dreamt of offering an eco-glamping experience at the van park which would use environmentally friendly waste, water and energy practices.

After the twin setbacks of Townsville’s 2019 floods and the COVID-19 pandemic, the couple is now using funding secured through the State Government’s Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund to develop 10 glamping tents at the park along with 13 new powered sites, a cafe, events centre and  wetland that will become home to birds and other native animals.

“It was an extremely difficult time for all of us,” Fiona said of the two-month closure in 2019 after the onsite waste treatment plant was badly damaged and stopped working during the massive rain event.

“We received little support from our insurer in the beginning, which also meant we had to carry huge expenses ourselves.”

The outlook is much brighter and Fiona is looking forward to the park’s additions being completed by March 2022.

“It’s been an adventure and I’m proud of seeing the enormous change we have made to the business,” she said.

“It has been really tough, but we never gave up. I can’t believe that soon we’ll be able to offer these experiences we dreamt of having at our park.

“I’m also extremely proud to be part of one of the most amazing industries, caravan parks, who are like family and never far away when you need a shoulder, advice or a friendly face.”

The Bush Oasis glamping experience will open on 1 April and is bookable now.

When the redevelopment is completed, guests will enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner at the new cafe overlooking the wetlands.

The events centre will cater for weddings, conferences and functions for up to 120 people.

Bush Oasis is set on 14 acres of undulating ground and offers a variety of accommodation options, from grassy or shaded powered or unpowered sites to the glamping tents.

Its location provides easy access to several national parks, Elliot Springs mountain bike trails, Magnetic Island, Townsville beaches and shopping options.

The park is self-sufficient with its own waste treatment plant and water from a bore which is processed through a new purification plant. It is also partly powered by solar energy.
