Hands on with the Holden Acadia
Holden fills its large SUV space with the Acadia.
Caprice – it might be a name from the recent past, but one frequently dropped by senior management and engineers at the launch of Holden’s all-new Acadia.
You might wonder about the connection, given the Caprice is a four-door, limo-like saloon and the Acadia a large segment, seven-seat SUV. However, Holden is convinced the range-topping Acadia LTZ-V, particularly, begs comparison.
“It is the next generation of Holden Australian family car,” Holden Chairman and Managing Director Dave Buttner said.
“Riding in the Acadia offers a premium experience, with the luxury of space combined with versatile interior configurations, the latest technology, a full suite of safety features and local tuning for our roads.”
We agree, based on our launch drive from Melbourne Airport to Healesville, around the picturesque, if damp and misty, Yarra Valley and back to the airport. In one word, the Acadia is ‘impressive’.
There is a choice of three specification levels – base level LT, mid-range LTZ and LTZ-V – all available in front-wheel or all-wheel-drive. Drive-away pricing starts from:

Under the bonnet is a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine with direct fuel injection, stop/start technology and active fuel management. It has 231kW of power and 367Nm of torque to put to the road via a nine-speed automatic transmission. The ADR combined cycle fuel consumption is rated at 8.9 litres/100km in two-wheel drive and 9.3 in all-wheel drive using standard unleaded fuel.
It might be built in Tennessee and styled unashamedly American, but Acadia underwent extensive localised handling and ride calibration by Holden engineers at the company’s Lang Lang proving ground in Victoria.
A genuine seven-seater, Acadia’s second row adjusts front to rear allowing leg room for all and maximum usability of the third row. Both second and third rows of rear seats fold flat for extra cargo capacity if need be.
