Make your car unattractive to thieves
It only takes a thief a few seconds to steal an unprotected car, so you need to make sure you vehicle isn’t the one that entices a theft.
We’ve all had that moment when we’ve lost our car in a large car park and thought for a moment it had been stolen. Here are a few tips to ensure you really are just forgetful and your car is still sitting somewhere in that carpark safe and well, just awaiting your return.
Don’t leave valuables in your car
Leaving valuables in clear sight in your car is an open invitation to thieves whether it be to steal the car, with all valuables, or just the valuables. If valuables must be left in a car hide them out of sight. Do not leave laptops, tablets or smartphones in your car, as these are easily detected by hand-held scanners, so a thief knows they are there even if you have hidden them.
Ensure your car is locked
While this may seem obvious, it’s important and not always as simple as clicking the lock button on your keys. You must also ensure all doors and windows are properly closed and secured.
Park your vehicle close to home
This gives you the best chance of hearing the thief and if the car is parked in a driveway, it is always less attractive to thieves, as they are often wary of possible sensor lights.
A car that looks like it has a security system, whether it’s an engine immobiliser or alarm, is immediately less attractive. It can even be as simple as an antitheft device sticker on your car window.
Ensure your keys are secure
Keeping your keys out of sight in your home can make a big difference, as many thieves will break into houses with the sole purpose of stealing car keys to make an easy get away with no fear of car alarms alerting anyone.
It’s an obvious thing to do and although it is costly, it can protect you in the instance your car is stolen. It is also worth noting many insurance companies offer discounted premiums for cars with anti-theft devices.
