Mini goes electric

The all-new mini electric hatch charges into Australia.

Mini has unveiled its pricing and specifications for the first electric Mini in the Australian market.

Joining a limited Australian electric vehicle (EV) market, the Mini Electric Hatch, known previously as the Mini Cooper SE, will sell from $59,990 (before on-road costs) and arrive in dealerships from August 2020.

Powered by a 32.6kWh lithium-ion battery and a 135kW motor, the Mini Electric Hatch is said to deliver rapid acceleration, from 0-60km/h in 3.9 seconds and 0-100km/h in 7.3 seconds.

The battery is also capable of a 233km drive range on a single charge and can achieve an 80% charge in 35 minutes when using a 50kW DC public charger.

Retaining design elements from the three-door ICE-powered Mini Cooper S, the EV will be available in four colours at launch: white silver, midnight black, British racing green and chilli red.

The vehicle will also come equipped with a black leather interior, two-tone 17-inch alloys in a white/black or red/green combination and wing mirrors in yellow.

The Mini Electric Hatch utilizes a “go-kart” driving feel by positioning powertrain components low and near the centre of the car in a T-shape, coupled with suspension tuned to a car with a low centre of gravity.

Mini fans keen to get their hands on the EV will need to act fast and make an online deposit with their Mini dealer on one of the four specifications.

General Manager of Mini Australia Brett Waudby said online customers would be joining the thousands who have already indicated their interest on the highly anticipated model.

“The arrival of the Mini Electric Hatch in Australia heralds a new chapter for the brand – a charge into the future of electromobility without compromising the marque’s core values of creativity, vibrancy and smart urbanity,” Mr Waudby said.

“It is wonderful to see such a positive response we are getting to the car. Our dealers across the nation are extremely excited to add this model to our customer offering, which is sure to be an absolute thrill to drive.”
