New Kluger looks Grande
New looks, features and hybrid drivetrain for Toyota’s family favourite Kluger SUV.
Toyota has launched its all-new Kluger with the popular family SUV boasting a fresh look, improved safety features, enhanced dynamics and for the first time in Australia, a hybrid powertrain.
The Kluger is well-established as one of Australia's favourite seven-seat SUVs and Toyota claims this fourth-generation model is more premium, refined and sustainable.
Toyota Australia Vice-President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the addition of a hybrid drivetrain to the Kluger range demonstrated Toyota's commitment to delivering on electrified options.
"Kluger is now the eighth Toyota model in Australia that offers a fuel-efficient, environmentally conscious, hybrid drivetrain and as our sales success proves, it (hybrid) is still currently the leading option for environmentally sustainable transport," Mr Hanley said.
"While Toyota is continuing to develop a range of alternative powertrains to meet our sustainability goals into the future, right here, right now, for this market, we believe a petrol electric hybrid meets the needs of families for a practical and affordable vehicle perfectly.”
Toyota claims the new-generation Kluger offers improved driving dynamics, a larger and more refined cabin, as well as stylish new looks and the latest in safety technology.
The new Kluger comes in three trim levels – GX, GXL and Grande – in petrol 2WD guise or hybrid or petrol AWD configuration.
The new hybrid system combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine with three electric motors that generate a maximum combined output of 184kW, driving through an advanced AWD system.
Combined cycle fuel consumption is an impressive 5.6L/100km with CO2 emissions of just 128g/km.
The hybrid Kluger drives through an electronic continuously variable transmission (e-CVT) and e-Four AWD system that allows up to 100% of drive to be sent through the front wheels or up to 80% through the rear, depending on conditions, with a Trail mode for off-road environments.
The other powertrain is the same V6 petrol engine that featured in the previous model with identical 218kW/350Nm outputs but Toyota says fuel economy is improved by 4-7%.
The V6 Petrol versions are offered with two different AWD systems that can split torque from 100% to the front axle and 50:50 front to rear, with a more sophisticated Torque Vectoring system in the top-spec Grande able to also adjust torque distribution between the rear wheels.
Built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the new Kluger is claimed to deliver improved ride and handling and a more refined and premium feel on the road.
Refinement levels have also been stepped up inside the new model with soft-touch materials, fresh design elements and increased space for up to seven occupants, according to Toyota.
Safety-wise, the new Kluger features the latest driver assistance features including a pre-collision system with pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, emergency steering assist and intersection turn assist on every model.
Other components of the comprehensive standard safety package include active cruise control – with curve speed reduction function – lane trace assist, blind-spot monitor, reversing camera and seven airbags.
Standard equipment includes keyless entry and start, manual front and rear dual-zone air conditioning, rain sensing wipers and automatic lights, and five USB ports.
GXL models feature power heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, power tailgate and satellite navigation for the latest generation multimedia system.
The top-of-the-range Kluger Grande adds a panoramic moonroof, hands-free opening for the power tailgate, ventilation for the front seats, head-up display, a panoramic view monitor, leather-accented seats and a premium 11-speaker JBL audio system.
