Nissan Juke ticks more boxes

Updated tech, drive train and equipment for funky Nissan Juke.

Nissan’s new Juke compact SUV doubles down on the polarising styling of its mould-breaking predecessor, adding substance to its new look with tech upgrades and a more lux interior targeting millennial buyers.

There’s more interior space too, courtesy of the compact SUV being built on a new platform, and a thrifty new engine and gearbox combination designed to improve fuel consumption and lower emissions.

The Juke range starts at $27,990 for the entry-level ST, and rises to $36,490 for the fully loaded Ti.

In between are the ST+ ($30,740) and ST-L ($33,940), with the latter looking like the sweet spot for buyers in terms of the combination of features and price. It’s also predicted to be the biggest seller, with a forecast 50% of sales.

All Juke models are front-wheel drive only and powered by a new turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine hitched to a seven-speed automated-manual transmission.

The new drivetrain represents two significant firsts for Nissan Australia: it’s the smallest engine fitted to a local model; and the twin-clutch, or DCT transmission, is a step away from CVTs, which have been the company’s preferred transmission for some years now.

Discreet paddle shifts mounted behind the steering wheel on all models enable manual control of the gearbox, while the higher-spec ST-L and Ti models also get a drive mode selector switch that offers the choice of Normal, Eco and Sport modes.

The engine’s outputs of 84kW and 180Nm are competitive with category rival the Toyota CH-R but off the pace of larger-engine models like the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-3.

On the plus side, the Juke’s combined cycle fuel consumption of 5.8L/100km makes it one of the most fuel-efficient non-hybridised small SUVs in Australia.

Stylistically, the new Juke draws on many of the design cues of its innovative predecessor but adds more sophisticated design elements that adds premium to its youthful, fun looks.

The dramatic sports coupe styling is marked by broad shoulders, tapered glasshouse and a floating roofline that sits over large wheel arches housing 17- or 19-inch alloy wheels, depending on the model.

The front end retains the original’s distinctive circular headlamps but these are now LED and feature a Y-shaped signature, along with high-beam assist and daytime running lights.

The original’s hidden rear door handles are back, now located discretely in the blacked out area of the small C-Pillar.

Inside, there has been a big focus on quality and tech with soft-touch material on the dash, door trims and foot well and ambient lighting on the ST-L and Ti models.

Classy sculpted mono-form seats with chunky side bolsters add some sporting flair with seat heating on all models except the ST.

The Ti models also get a cool-looking Bose personal plus audio system integrated into the headrests for a more immersive sound experience.

A high-mounted 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with DAB and smartphone integration takes prominence at the centre of the dash, while a digital driver assist display in the main instrument panel brings media, navigation, safety and driver assist systems into driver’s field of view.

The large digital speedometer includes traffic sign recognition and visual alerts when exceeding the posted limit and adaptive cruise control on higher spec models.

The Juke comes with a maximum 5-Star ANCAP rating and includes the latest active safety features such as forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and brake-assisted lane keep assist and blind spot warning.

The new Juke has sacrificed some cubic capacity over its predecessor but has more than made up for this with a comprehensive safety and convenience features upgrade, as well as its stylish new looks and notably more premium fit-out.

The new platform promises a more involving driving experience and together with Nissan’s standard five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty makes a compelling value case against its key rivals.
