Seven reasons to visit the Scenic Rim in the school holidays
Day trips, weekends away or week-long holidays are sorted with these family-friendly activities.
Situated on the doorstep to Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the Scenic Rim is home to ancient rainforests, national parks, galleries, farm stays, charming towns and craft breweries.
From day trips to week-long adventure holidays, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy on your next holidays.
Adventure time on Mt Tambourine
Mt Tambourine is home to a wonderland of family-friendly adventure activities.
Start at Thunderbird Park, where you can choose from ziplining, thunder egg fossicking, mini golf, horse riding, laser skirmish, bird feeding and a reptile show.
Continue up the hill to Tamborine Mountain Rainforest Skywalk where you can explore the rainforest canopies 30m above the ground.
Complete your day with a guided tour of fascinating, purpose-built conservation project, the Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves.
You might even see some scarecrows around as the annual Tamborine Mountain Scarecrow Festival wraps up on 20 September.
Drop a line at one of the Scenic Rim’s three dams.
Maroon Dam is stocked with golden perch, silver perch, Mary River cod and Australian bass, and is surrounded by holiday parks offering camping and cabin accommodation.
Moogerah Dam is a water-skier or jet-skier’s dream. The dam is also a popular fishing spot and there are a number of scenic walks through the surrounding countryside.
For a calmer day out on the water, try Wyaralong Dam. Powered craft are prohibited but non-motorised craft, including kayaks, small sail craft and canoes, are allowed.
Discover a secret
Little Bee’s Secret Garden, tucked behind Owl Wholefoods in Canungra, is a must-visit for anyone interested in science or gardening.
Watch native bees at work in box and log hives, learn how to keep them safe in your garden and make your own bee hotel to take home.
Grab a DIY seed bomb kit and educational resources to continue the fun at home.
Taste farm life
Visit Towri Springs farmers market on 20 September to take part in family friendly activities including a live sheep-shearing demonstration, kids cheese workshops, sheep-milking demonstrations and lamb cuddling.
Bring an empty esky to stock up on local produce to support Scenic Rim farmers.
The newly opened O’Reilly’s Campground is the perfect spot to set up for the holidays. The O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat Eco Rangers School Holidays Program will keep the kids entertained with rainforest art, campfires, games and scavenger hunts.
The other side of Lamington National Park offers Binna Burra Lodge, which was recently rebuilt following devastating bushfires last year. Choose from a campsite, safari tent or family-size eco lodge.
Get your farm fix
For an authentic farm experience, look no further than the Scenic Rim’s host of farm stays.
Cuddle a camel
Visit Summerland Camels to enjoy all things camel, from award-winning cheese and gelato to camel milk skin and hair products.
Kids will love cuddling up to a camel, feeding time, camel rides and farm tours.
