RACQ Travel’s longest-serving consultant, Liz Frampton, reveals how travel has changed over time.

Timeless travel

In 1958, RACQ opened its first full service, accredited ‘Tour and Travel Bureau’ in Brisbane where, as reported in The Road Ahead at the time, “a constant stream of itchy-footed RACQ members (had) their travel problems solved by experienced Club officers.”

Decades on, nothing has changed, except one travel office has grown to 15 and members now benefit from the experience of 55 consultants across the state.

RACQ Travel’s longest-serving consultant, Liz Frampton, said while the industry had changed over that time, RACQ’s commitment to providing “customised and professional service” to its members was the same.

Liz joined RACQ’s Townsville branch in 1981, where she discovered her passion for travel. After achieving her Associate Diploma in Travel and Tourism, Liz and was able to combine that passion with her career by becoming an RACQ Travel consultant.

“I’ve seen a lot of places, met some wonderful people and done amazing things – I don’t think I’ve wasted the opportunity,” she said.

Over her 37 years with RACQ, Liz has ridden the highs and lows of the travel industry, including the tumultuous period following the September 11 attacks on New York in 2001.

The uncertainty that followed, with people fearful of flying, was the most challenging period of her career.

“It changed the world... people were afraid to travel,” she said.

“Anyone in the travel industry at the time will tell you it was the most terrible time.”

For Liz, that period further highlighted the importance of having the support and guidance of an experience travel consultant to call upon when needed. That sentiment was echoed by RACQ Manager Travel Network Kellie Banditt.

“Members trust our consultants to provide the best travel options for them, and trust that their experience will be memorable,” she said.

“RACQ Travel has evolved during this time but one thing has not changed – the service we provide to our members and the experience they receive when dealing with one of our consultants is exceptional.”
