It’s easy to add impulse items to your trolley when shopping in the supermarket, particularly if there are kids with you. The added expense soon eats into your budget and may not do your waistline any good either. Here are some tips for more cost-effective shopping for healthier foods.

  1. Write a grocery list
    Write a short list of everything you need from the grocery store. By writing a list you will save time looking for products, cut down on any impulse purchases and rethink your weekly food budget.
  2. Buy whole food ingredients
    Whole foods don’t contain any preservatives and are loaded with nutritional value.
    Eating more whole foods can be beneficial to your health by lowering your calorie intake and risk of diabetes. The best foods to consider include sweet potatoes, spinach, beans, squash, cauliflower, zucchini and citrus.
  3. Buy in bulk
    If you can buy beans, grains, nuts, seeds and other produce items in bulk and store them in airtight canisters, you’ll save money in the long run. It will also reduce your trips to the grocery store and save you time.
  4. Meal prep
    Invest in some good-quality lunch containers and set aside a weekly time to prepare a few meals. Meal prepping will give you more time during the week, stop you from eating unhealthy food and help you save money. Once you get in the habit of doing it each week, you will notice the difference.
  5. Freeze food
    Use this time to put your freezer to good use. Make large quantities of your favourite meals and then freeze some to use later. Your freezer is also a great place to store fresh produce like bananas, zucchini and fruits to use in later in smoothies, soups, desserts and stir-fries.
