Running for a cause

The RACQ International Women's Day Fun Run is Brisbane’s biggest celebration of women and brings together people of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels to support women affected by breast cancer.

Runners and walkers will set out on a picturesque five or 10km loop alongside the Brisbane River on Sunday, 4 March, 2018.

Participants are encouraged to fundraise to support Mater Chicks in Pink. Last year, more than 12,000 people registered for the event – including 4282 RACQ members – and raised more than $500,000.

For RACQ’s Client Services Consultant Teagan Dilger, who’s mother Nyree died from breast cancer earlier this year, the 2018 event is personal.

“Honestly, it is going to be really tough for me,” she said.

“I know I will cry."

She was only 47 years old, but fitness was one of her main passions, so it will be even more special to me doing the walk for her with my family and friends from RACQ.

Miss Dilger said it was fantastic how RACQ and the people of Queensland fundraised for those in need and urged everyone to dig deep.

“It’s an honour doing this for my mum and making people aware of just how much research is needed so we can one day find a cure,” she said.

“My mum was fighter to the very last day."

“She kept fighting as she had a family to live for."

We always called her our warrior and I know I will take that spirit into the run.”

Miss Dilger said people should cherish every moment they have with family and friends.

“Speak up, be strong, be close as a family, enjoy every moment you have and, most importantly, make a lot of memories,” she said.

“When I was growing up, mum’s goals were to see us at our formal and she would always say to us that reaching another birthday was such an achievement."

“It’s tough, but you need to celebrate when you can and be grateful for all time you have.”
