Congratulations on your engagement! You now get to plan the most special day of your lives. To help make your day memorable for all the right reasons, we’ve got some handy hints on planning your dream wedding.

Invitation list

Before you get started – try to do a rough guest list. Knowing how many people will be coming can really help you budget for food, stationery and wedding favours. It’ll even help narrow down venues and whether you will meet minimum numbers for catering/drinks packages.

Overseas weddings can be super romantic, but add up the costs of accommodation, flights, entertainment and the different exchange rates before you commit. Your guests will also need to pay a little extra to attend so try to keep the costs down for everyone, if you can. Having an overseas wedding can mean smaller wedding numbers through so they can pay off! Just do your research.
Popular wedding venues are popular because they are amazing! You can pay extra for a desirable location, but if you look around and book ahead of time, you may be able to get a bargain. Hunt around and find a location you both love, which doesn’t break the budget.

Time and day

You can save lots of money by carefully choosing the time to get married. In Queensland, peak wedding season is in spring, followed by autumn. Getting married in these months can add a lot of additional money on general costs. If you can, consider marrying in summer or winter.

Most people get married on a Saturday, but again you can be stung with surcharges on this popular day. If you can, consider a weekday or Sunday wedding. You can save lots if you choose a less popular time and season.

Wedding rings and credit card

You can get special wedding loans that’ll help you pay for your big day. Speak to your lender and find one that suits you both. Your wedding budget is usually broken down on the following:

Reception = 50% (food, music, drinks, venue hire)
Flowers = 10% (bouquet, table arrangements, buttonholes)
Attire = 10% (wedding dress and shoes, groomsman suits, bridesmaid dresses)
Entertainment = 10% (music, photo booth)
Photography = 10%
Rings = 3%
Stationery = 2% (save the date, wedding invitations, table numbers, menus)
Transportation = 2% (limousine, bus/taxi for guests)
Gifts = 2% (party favours, wedding party gifts)
Miscellaneous = 1% (candy buffet, any extras)
