What to ask:

Are you licensed?

Check your tradie belongs to organisations like Master Builders Australia or Housing Industry Association. This handy little question proves they hold the right accreditation and are legit!

Can I get a written quote?

Always get a written quote so you know what’s included in the job. By getting multiple quotes you’ll be able to narrow done the right tradie for the job. Prices can vary greatly – so spend a little extra time researching different tradespeople.

Can I see any testimonials?

Have a read through testimonials of past clients. You can do a google search and see what reviews come up too.

Do you guarantee your work?

Find out whether your tradie will guarantee their work and fix it if anything does go wrong. It can really help to get these guarantees in writing.

Do you know/follow council requirements and building codes?

All tradies should be up-to-date with building codes and council requirements. Check they’ll be conforming to these codes before they start any work.

Do you have up-to-date public liability insurance?

Public liability insurance will cover you and anyone else if an accident happens on-site. Your tradie should have this insurance covered – just ask them if it’s all up to date.

Getting the work done

When you’ve found the right tradie and they’re at work – try to be on-site or available to answer any questions. Always confirm the work they’ll be doing and check it before they leave. If you’re happy, pay them on time and always give a testimonial so you can help them out for future jobs.
