Holidays

Sponsored content: While people in other places are huddled inside around heaters, in Tropical North Queensland you can indulge in cocktails by the beach or laze by the pool at a luxury resort… or become an Ironman or raise money riding 780kms to Karumba - ay, carumba!

Cooktown and Cape York Expo
Being voted the world’s best Ironman course by athletes in recent years makes you want to swim 3.8km, ride 180km and run 42km. Doesn’t it? Well, luckily there are plenty of vantage points to cheer on the thousands of athletes who participate in the Ironman Cairns Asia Pacific Championship and the Cairns Ironman 70.3 races, at the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival, 11–12 June.

Cooktown Discovery Festival, 17–19 June, acknowledges the shared story of reconciliation between Captain Cook’s crew and the Guugu Yimithirr people, on the shores of the now-named Endeavour River. The recorded discoveries of flora and fauna species are celebrated throughout the festival’s program.

Head west after you’ve discovered Cooktown, to watch talented jockeys vie for position on the outback track, testing their skills and pitting their steeds against each other at the Laura Races & Rodeo, 24–26 June. Ringers and stockmen compete with rodeo riders who travel great distances for a chance to take home some amazing prizes and trophies.

The Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride, 25 June–1 July, raises funds for children’s education at small schools dotted along the ride route through five shires across the base of Cape York. Riders of all levels can participate in the 780km trip to Karumba, riding as much or as little as you want. Support vehicles and a catering crew will help get you from start to finish.
