RACQ offers free car child restraint checks and fitting

Safety
Ensure your little one is safe on the road by registering for a child restraint fitting in December.

Whether you’re a new or seasoned parent, you would know firsthand the pressure of choosing the right car seat for your child.

Once that decision is out of the way, the next step is equally as daunting – installing it safely and correctly.

Yet, according to RACQ’s 2024 Annual Road Safety Survey, less than half of those with a child restraint have had them professionally installed.

RACQ Education Lead Louise Hart said upcoming sessions hosted by the Club would be the perfect opportunity for parents to get their car seats checked for free.

“We know that installing a child seat correctly can be stressful for any parent, including the decision of whether to pay and have it installed professionally or do it themselves,” Ms Hart said.

“Our team of qualified professionals will be hosting free sessions in early December, checking the safety of already completed installations or fitting car seats fresh from the box.

“With their child’s safety the number one priority, we understand why parents may want us to review their handy work, so we’re encouraging Queenslanders to register for one of our upcoming sessions.”

RACQ’s research also found almost one in five Queenslanders have a second-hand, gifted or loaned child restraint.

Ms Hart said while second-hand restraints are a good option, there are some important things to consider.

“If you do decide to use a second-hand child restraint, it’s important to ensure you know its full history and trust the previous owner, as any restraint involved in a crash cannot be used again,” she said.

“The Queensland Government recommends you use a child restraint that is less than 10 years old, so make sure you check the manufacture date on the base and that there is an Australian Standards sticker attached.

“Whether you want us to check an already installed restraint or want us to install one for you, it’s worth coming along to one of our sessions.”
