How are foreign currency exchange rates calculated? Show more

Foreign currency exchange rates are primarily determined by supply and demand. Worldwide, banks are constantly buying and selling currencies according to their customers’ needs. If the demand of a certain currency rises of falls, so does its value.  Certain currencies are ‘pegged’ to another currency’s value, a mixture of others, or a different measure of value, such as gold.

In most cases a Telegraphic Transfer (TT) – also known as a "wire" – is the quickest way to send funds abroad.

A TT will normally take 2-3 business days for major currencies, and up to 10 business days for minor or exotic currencies to reach the beneficiary. Please note no guarantee can be placed on transfer times as we are always reliant on the efficiency of the receiving bank to credit the beneficiary. You may send a TT by visiting your RACQ Bank branch.

Sending a TT in the beneficiary’s currency is usually more cost effective and helps ensure the funds are credited more quickly, as the payment can go "straight through".

A Draft – similar to a bank cheque made out in a foreign currency –  is another way for you to make payments and settle a transaction overseas. Drafts can be sent overseas via mail and are available in a wide range of currencies.  This is also a service which requires you to visit an RACQ Bank Branch offer in-branch only.

For more information on sending money internationally, visit racq.com.au/banking/travel-and-international-services/sending-money.

To get started, you may download and complete the Telegraphic Transfer Form, or our Foreign Bank Draft Order Form for drafts, and bring it along to your nearest RACQ Bank branch.

You may transfer money internationally from all of our transaction accounts. Transfer times will vary according to your method used – (e.g.Telegraphic transfer, bank draft) – and must be finalised in person at an RACQ Bank branch. For more information, see Sending Money Internationally.

Check out our Inward Payments Form. Here you will find all the information required to complete your transfer overseas.

A SWIFT code (Also known as a BIC code) is an international bank-identifying code. RACQ Bank uses SWIFT codes to send money to overseas banks. When making an overseas transfer, you will need to know the SWIFT/BIC code of the bank you wish to send money to.

An IBAN, or International Bank Account Number, is a code used to process international payments, typically within Europe.

International payments from Australian accounts to IBAN-recognised countries will require a valid IBAN. IBANs tend to be very long, so make sure you have the correct information before transferring.
