Alfa Romeo 159 JTD Sportswagon (2007)

by Chris Bishop,reviewed October 2007

At long last, Alfa has made the automatic choice.

A conventional, six-speed auto promises a smoother run for the brand and its buyers.

However, the Q-Tronic self-shifter is tardy to kick down, holds third for too long and often proves abrupt. The diesel promises ample pulling force and revs strongly but it never performs the way it should.

There’s also audible turbo ‘whoosh’ in the first three gears and plenty of diesel clatter.

Other laments include limited cabin space, restricted rear vision and a large turning circle.

Admirable qualities include its sharp handling, taut but composed ride and effortless brakes.

Alfa also deserves applause for this estate’s safety, seats, build quality and practicality, while the style is striking.
