Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TFSI (2009)

by John Ewing,reviewed April 2009

With six engines, including two turbo-diesels, and four different gearboxes, there should be a variant in Audi's Sportback five-door hatch range to suit different tastes and wallets.

The 2.0TFSI Quattro version we drove isn't cheap, but offers good standard safety features and typical of the breed, it's impeccably finished throughout. Options are plentiful but pricey and now include an automatic reverse parallel-park system ($1,750). Engine performance is spirited, while the six-speed DSG gearbox (S-Tronic) delivers ultra-quick shifts. A firm, well-controlled ride and well weighted steering complement its deft handling. Tyre noise on coarse chip bitumen and a front armrest/stowage box that's awkwardly placed relative to the handbrake blemish a good package.
