Mazda CX-5 GT AWD

by Barry Green,reviewed June 2015

It might say something about Mazda’s pursuit of perfection that it recently saw fit to upgrade its CX-5.
This, despite topping the overall SUV sales charts for the past two years. A week spent driving the all-wheel-drive Grand Touring model, with 2.5-litre petrol engine and six-speed auto, validated Mazda’s claims of improved ride quality and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels. Thanks to softer calibration of the dampers, front and rear, the CX-5 rides more smoothly over poor surfaces and corners flatter. It’s also much quieter on road, with a noticeable reduction in tyre ‘roar’ intrusion which is attributed to extra sound-deadening around the wheel arches and inside the cabin. The 2.5, the larger of two petrol engines on offer, is a torquey and smooth operator made even more so now by the addition of a ‘drive selection’ switch to sharpen response. Standard equipment on the GT includes MZD Connect, Mazda’s advanced next-generation car connectivity system. In addition to providing hands-free telephone operation and contact list access, MZD Connect can also receive short text messages. For $1060, an optional Safety Pack that includes Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Smart City Brake Support Forward/ Reverse is money well spent. A very good car has just got even better.
