Nissan Y62 Patrol ST-L (2013)
The new Y62 Nissan Patrol range is, surprisingly, a V8 petrol-only affair with turbo-diesel buyers still being served up the previous generation.
It’s hard not to like the strong response and massive torque provided by the new model’s smooth, sophisticated V8 with standard seven-speed auto.
It hustles the Patrol’s near-2700kg mass into action with great authority. And while we didn’t put it to the test, it should cope easily with the 3500kg maximum towing capacity. However, it slurps up premium unleaded at a wallet-wilting rate that also seems out of step with the current trend to more sustainable motoring.
Our city average was 21.4 litres/100km, a little higher than the official urban figure of 20.6. Steady highway cruising at legal limits, where the engine ticks over around 1600rpm, should deliver significantly better though.
And out on the open road, the Y62 offers relaxed, effortless and comfortable touring ability. Around town and off-road amongst the trees, you are all too aware of its physical size, the upside of which is a spacious interior where standard eight seats are found. The luxury Ti-L version gets seating for seven.
Our off-road testing was limited, but with its clearances, ability to crawl up or down steep inclines, the engine’s brute force and Nissan’s All-Mode 4WD system, we are sure it will maintain Patrol’s solid ‘go anywhere’ reputation.
