Peugeot 207 XT HDi (2007)

It’s hard to stay calm about the fuel frugality found in Peugeot’s new diesel-powered 207 HDi.
Although trip computers may mislead, motorists will thrill to a cruising range beyond 1200 km. Our light-throttle highway return was a heady 4.5 litres/100 km.

The French brand has improved build quality, quietness, size and, yes, the cuteness of its small hatch. Better too is foot-well space. Diesel 207s are only available in manual, and there’s now room for boots and pedals.

Performance is mighty from 1400 to 3500 revs, although a propensity to stall is less welcome. It rides firm but handles nicely – the only ‘downer’ being some steering vagueness.

It’s still small, costly and has average ergonomics. And, although very safe, electronic stability should also be available.
