Renault Clio Sport 197 (2009)

by John Ewing,reviewed April 2009

Those hankering after a hot hatch can add the fleet-footed Clio Sport 197 to their list.
Prices are up compared with the previous model and hover $1000 below sibling Megane RS, though still in striking distance of key rivals.

The 197 in the name gives the 2.0-litre, naturally aspirated engine's power output in horsepower, that's 145 kW for the metric-minded. It's eager to please and responsive through to the red line at 7500 rpm, while the close-ratio, six-speed manual is a slick worker.

Nimble handling, great grip, a flat stance through corners and strong Brembo brakes ensure driver appeal. Tyre sealant supplied instead of a spare wheel and the lack of steering reach adjustment get our thumbs down though.
