Subaru Outback 3.6R
Buyers have embraced Subaru’s new, fifth-generation Outback SUV with February producing a record 890 sales – 261.8 percent ahead of the same month last year.
Improvements in key areas, along with price cuts, have been the sweetener. Take the flagship of the seven-model range, the 3.6R. At $47,990 it’s $10,000 cheaper, has a Lineartronic CVT in lieu of five-speed auto, is 3.9 percent better fuel efficient than previously and fairly bristles with standard equipment. The latter includes Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist safety system, which has been updated with brake light recognition, pre-collision steering and a 40 percent improvement to its distance and wide angle ranges. Smooth, well-appointed, comfortable and spacious, in some ways the Outback feels more station wagon than SUV. But don’t be fooled – all-wheel-drive, X-Mode with hill descent, 213mm ground clearance and good, dual-purpose tyres enable the Outback to venture further off road than some of its opposition. There’s plenty of oomph from the 3.6-litre six-cylinder Boxer engine, but not fuel meagreness – we averaged 3.1 litres/100km more than the ADR figure of 9.9. A new, powered tailgate (with programmable height setting) allows easy access to a useful cargo capacity of 510 litres. Drop the rear seats and that swells to 1800 litres.
