Volkswagen Passat R36 (2009)
by Barry Green,reviewed April 2009
The ‘R’ in Volkswagen’s Passat R36 designation might well have been ‘P’, ‘Q’ or ‘X’.
That’s ‘P’ as in performance, ‘X’ as in X factor and ‘Q’ as in Q car, for lurking within this stylish, four-door, mid-sized sedan is an accomplished sports car.
Under the R36’s skin is a responsive 3.6-litre V6, a slick-shifting 6-speed DSG transmission, sports suspension (lowered 25mm, tauter springs and dampers) and powerful, vented, four wheel disc brakes.
Tick off also bi-Xenon headlights, leather-microfibre sports seats, 250-watt audio system, deeper side sills, rear spoiler, chromed exhausts and ‘R’ badging as standard.
It’s a quality, engaging drive without major flaw.
