Best Light Car

Renault Clio Expression Tce 120

Although still small, cars in the Light category now deliver levels of quality, refinement, safety and on-road ability that, until recently, were only found in much larger vehicles.

Last year, the newly released Renault Clio was something of a surprise winner as it was not on many people’s radar. This year, it retained its title in a rigorous back-to-back comparison against the updated Volkswagen Polo and Honda Jazz models.

The Clio’s stylish presentation and excellent dynamics make it an enjoyable and involving car to drive. The smart looking five-door hatchback body features hidden rear door handles, giving it a coupé look.

It has a generous level of standard equipment, seat comfort is among the best, and the interior appearance is more upmarket than most of its peers.

The Clio Expression TCe 120 employs a 1.2-litre turbocharged direct petrol injected four-cylinder engine and six-speed dual-clutch style automatic transmission. The official ADR fuel consumption is a frugal 5.2 litres/100km, but it does require 95 RON premium unleaded petrol.

Indicative Drive Away Price: $23,213
