Best Sports Car $50,000-$100,000

Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG

This category was one of the most tightly contested in the 2014 awards. The Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG nosed ahead of its extremely worthy competition by just six points, with the Golf R in second place and the Audi S3 Sportback 16 points further back.

With an indicative drive away price of $81,956, the Mercedes suffered in the area of pricing against the VW ($57,194) and Audi ($66,287), but it made up ground in the areas critical to this category. These include strong scores for performance, handling and braking. It also picked up some extra points in safety and seating comfort.

The performance capabilities of the A 45 are in no doubt. When it was launched in 2013, its 2.0-litre powerplant was touted as the most powerful four-cylinder production car engine in the world. With 265kW of power and 450Nm of torque available from 1500rpm, in a car that weighs just 1500kg, these figures are a tasty basic recipe for excitement.

More impressive is that this performance is achieved alongside very low fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, and strong safety credentials.

It’s these attributes that make the Mercedes-Benz A 45 the complete, modern sports car package.
