Don’t let your flexible water hoses cause serious water damage in your home

At RACQ, we’re always looking for ways to give our members more. That’s why we’re offering a free callout to replace up to two flexi hoses for at risk RACQ members*.

What are flexi hoses and why is checking them important?

Flexi hoses are a flexible braided hose found in most modern homes, replacing the copper piping used in older homes. They are usually found in bathrooms, laundries and kitchens connected to indoor plumbing including taps, sinks, basins, tubs and appliances.

Burst flexi hoses are one of the most common causes of internal flooding. These water hoses have a lifespan of between five and ten years and are increasingly seen as a key factor in water damage claims^.

A burst flexi hose can occur not just from age and wear, but also through incorrect installation by over tightening or looseness of the flexi hose fitting or, by lack of regular maintenance. If a major rupture occurs, these hoses have the potential to flood up to 1,500 litres of water per hour into your home^^, causing a significant and costly amount of damage. If you moved into a home or apartment that was built more than 5 years ago, it is worth having your flexi hoses examined by RACQ.

It’s clear that professional installation and regular maintenance and replacement of flexi hoses when necessary are key to avoiding the expense involved in repairing water damage.

What to look for when checking flexi hoses

It’s important to regularly check your flexi hoses to ensure proper care and limit your risk of a water leak or internal flooding. If you find you have flexi hoses that need replacing, make sure you book your free RACQ callout for the replacement of up to two flexi hoses*.

  • Assess your flexi hose connections by feeling across the outside braid casing for any cracks, marks or tears.
  • Also check any appliances, taps, basins or vanities the flexi hoses are connected to for any signs of water leakage or damage around the connection.
  • If you notice any of these signs, it could be an indication of some form of wear or damage to your flexi hose connection already.

There are other factors to consider when checking your flexi hoses.

Flexi hose length

Flexi hoses can vary a great deal in length and choosing the wrong sized flexi hose for your plumbing or appliance can cause problems. A flexi hose which is too short for its purpose can cause wear on the material as it’s stretched into place, leading to leaks.

Flexi hose connection and fitting

Flexi hoses are easy to over-tighten. This excessive force can lead to the rubber seals fracturing which can lead to leaks and eventually a massive rupture.

Unexplained puddles or patches of mould

Keep an eye out in your kitchen, bathroom or laundry for unexplained puddles or patches of mould forming on your floors, skirting boards, vanities or taps. You may also find water damage forming around the walls where your flexi hose connects to an appliance. This could be a sign of your flexi hose leaking, either at the connection or around the hose itself.
