Meet RACQ's Fuel Guru
Ian, a public policy expert with a PhD in economics, is responsible for monitoring the global fuel market closely to provide our members with valuable advice on when to fill the tank, and when not to.
While fuel is Ian’s bread and butter during the week, you’re unlikely to find him filling up at the local servo.
“For as long as I can remember I’ve ridden my bike. I grew up in a small town in the middle of England and my friends and I just used to ride everywhere. I’ve always ridden to work, but it’s probably only the last 10 years I’ve gotten very serious into racing. I like the longer races, the longer challenges. I’m nowhere near the podium, but that’s fine.”
While pedal power may be Ian’s energy source of choice, he genuinely believes in the importance of RACQ’s fuel advocacy, even with society’s growing focus on clean energy and an increasing consumer appetite for electric vehicles.
“I think a lot of people in Queensland are going to be buying petrol and diesel vehicles for a long time to come,” Ian said.
“In the future it’s to be a range of fuels depending on the vehicle size and use. But for passenger cars the future is battery electric vehicles. While most charging will be done at home. There will be an ever-growing network of public fast chargers and super-fast chargers, and there’ll still be a role for RACQ to lobby to make sure these prices are fair.
“The fuel and energy we use will change but the need for these to be affordable, reasonably priced and widely available will remain”.
