13 destinations to avoid in 2020

Queenslanders urged to avoid ‘no-go’ travel destinations.

Bali is one of the most popular holiday destinations with more than 1.1 million Australians visiting the Indonesian island in 2017.

However, Bali has been listed as a ‘no go’ destination for 2020 by travel gurus Fodor.

The annual list highlights the ethical, environmental and political issues that might concern ethical travellers.

With flights to Bali sometimes costing less than flights to Melbourne, it’s no wonder Australians account for more than 23% of tourists to the province.

But Indonesia’s most-visited island has suffered from ‘over-tourism’ over the last few years with the government looking at implementing a tourist tax to offset the impact of tourism on the environment.

Other environmental issues, such as water scarcity (brought on by the development of luxury villas and golf courses), plastic pollution and decreased farmland, have impacted the livelihood of locals.

Badly behaved tourists who fail to respect local traditions and customs, an increase in scams, theft and human trafficking, as well as tensions between locals and tourists, have caused the Indonesian government to call for a crackdown on misbehaving tourists.

Other locations that made the ‘no go’ list for over-crowding are Barcelona, Big Sur in California, Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Hanoi train Street in Vietnam.

It’s not all bad news though. Fodor also listed the 52 top places to go in 2020, including our very own Brisbane.
