How a $50 lottery ticket gives vulnerable Queensland children the gift of childhood

Sponsored Content: Little did long-time supporter of Act for Kids Kylie L* know that, when entering the Platinum Class Lottery as a donation to support the vital work of Act for Kids, she would win the first prize worth almost $110,000.

When Kylie  L from Queensland received the call to say she had won a new Mercedes-Benz worth almost $100,000, plus $10,000 in Platinum Bullion, she could not believe it.

“I had never even dreamed of winning when entering into the Act for Kids Platinum Class Lottery, “ Kylie L said.
“I’d always considered my entries as donations to support the inspirational work of Act for Kids.”

Act for Kids is an Australian charity established to treat and prevent child abuse and neglect, with centres located across Queensland – Brisbane, Cairns, Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Rockhampton, Ipswich and Gold Coast. Sadly, more than 49,000 children were abused or neglected in Australia last year [1], enough to fill most sporting stadiums. Act for Kids has more than 30 years’ experience working with kids and families and last year alone helped over 34,000 Australians.

In Queensland, Act for Kids’ important work falls under three pillars – prevention, education and treatment. The charity works with families at risk of entering the child protection system to help them get back on track.

Act for Kids also offer a protective behaviours program to schools to teach Year One students how to keep themselves safe. However, it is the work done in the treatment space that is truly remarkable.

Using a unique Integrated Therapy Model, Act for Kids helps children overcome trauma with the support of a psychologist, speech pathologist and occupational therapist. This multidisciplinary approach enables therapists to work together to address a child’s developmental delays and develop a treatment plan unique to the child and their situation.

Act for Kids is doing incredible things for abused and neglected children, but there is still work to be done. Due to the demand for its services, many centres have waiting lists of children who have lived through abuse or neglect, survived and deserve a second chance at childhood. Proceeds from the Act for Kids Platinum Class Lottery are vital for Act for Kids to continue to provide specialised treatment and care for vulnerable kids and families in Queensland.
