Be prepared

Are you ready for storm season?

Every year between November to April, Queenslanders brace themselves for another storm season.

Heavy rain, flooding, hail, bushfires and tropical cyclones are just some of the dangerous weather events which could strike Queensland at any time.

During the 2018-2019 season, RACQ received 8272 storm-related claims on home and contents insurance and motor vehicle insurance, totalling $175 million.

RACQ also received 13 bushfire claims in central Queensland in November 2018 worth more than $400,000.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said Queenslanders should prepare their properties ahead of the storm season to avoid damage.

“To be storm ready, you need to understand your risk and keep general home maintenance up-to-date,” Ms Ross said.

“This means trimming back trees in your yard, securing outdoor furniture, keeping your gutters clear of debris and fixing any leaks in the roof.

“If a hailstorm is predicted, park your vehicle under cover or cover the windscreen, bonnet and roof with a thick blanket for protection.

“Good preparation is the best defence.”

Ms Ross said it’s also important to ensure your home, contents and car insurance is up-to-date and adequate.
