Book review: Australia Free 3

Travelling and 4WDing enthusiast Mike Koch’s new travel guide to exploring Australia on a budget.

For the last seven years Mike Koch’s home has been on the road exploring Australia.

Having driven just about everywhere, he started documenting his trips to help other travellers see and do more on a budget.

Mr Koch said his first book, Australia Free, was published after hearing many people complain about the cost of travelling in the land down under.

“I was in Cairns on a camping trip at the local caravan park and people had heard that I knew a lot about Australia and four groups came up to me for advice on what to see and do during their travel,” Mr Koch said.

“I kept hearing the same story – ‘it’s too expensive to travel so what is there that is free to see and do’. I saw a need to write the book, Australia Free, so that people can have a great holiday and not break the bank.”

Australia Free 3 is the latest edition of the Australia Free series which lists, with photographs, hundreds of free campsites, roadside rest areas and activities across the continent.

The guide is perfect for families eager to make the most of their holidays and weekends on a budget and highlights free-access attractions including swimming spots, waterfalls, beaches, museums, walks, lookouts, parks and gardens.

It also features pet-friendly options and free opportunities for Australia’s best wildlife encounters.

“There can be a mental block for people that Australia is too expensive but, as I have discovered and proven, there are so many ways to save money and still enjoy the staggering beauty right in our own backyard,” Mr Koch said.

“There are always cheaper accommodation options or free camp sites available these days. You can see and do so many things in every state that will blow your mind and not cost you a cent.

“I think more and more young families are discovering this as they pack up their little ones to do the great big lap of Australia.”

Australia Free 3 will be available in book stores from April 2019 or can be pre-ordered online now at Booktopia.
