One of the world’s best road trip adventures is waiting for you in your backyard. Get ready for the ‘Welcome Mate’ experience.

Get Ready to say ‘I’ll Be Your Mate’

The Balonne Shire in south-west Queensland sits at the crossroads of the Adventure Way and Great Inland Way offering a must-do river-town tourist trail where the bush meets the outback.

To celebrate recent rain, which has all the rivers running, the Balonne Shire Council is launching the ‘Welcome Mate’ campaign, inviting everyone to experience the region at its picture-perfect best.

Welcome Mate Packs will be given to first 500 travellers who visit the St George Visitor Information Centre and say, ‘I’ll be your Mate’.  The packs include a $20 Buy Balonne Gift Card, discount vouchers, local merchandise and regional information.

A new Grey Nomad Visitor Services Ambassador Program will embed visitors into the community for up to two months.  The volunteer program will see you living like a local, meeting new people, making a difference and, most importantly, having fun.

Ambassadors will receive free camping in return for working some volunteer shifts at the St George Visitor Information Centre and helping with major events. There are also opportunities to work on community projects in Thallon.

Major events for 2020 include Easter in the Vines, Yellowbelly Country Music Festival and Thallon’s Grazing at The Watering Hole long table dinner at the town’s epic painted silos.

The Balonne region’s seven towns of St George, Dirranbandi, Bollon, Hebel, Thallon, Nindigully and Mungindi have shaken off the dust and are throwing out the welcome mat.

Expect a warm country welcome from the light-hearted locals who want to share their wide-open spaces and quirky places which include some of Australia’s most iconic country pubs.  From river cruising to thermal spas, whether you want five-star or a million stars, you’ll find it here.

For the holiday of a lifetime hit the road to St George and surrounds where everyone is ready to say, ‘Welcome mate’.
