Genesis facelifts its G80
Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand releases two new models.
Genesis – it’s Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand, rather like Lexus is to Toyota, though arguably less well known in the Australian market with only one model on sale here since the brand’s local debut in 2014.
Now there are two new models to choose from and over the next three years, expect to see several additional models, including SUVs and eventually the brand’s flagship G90 sedan, role in.
And putting distance between Hyundai and itself, these models will now be sold through company-owned Genesis Studios, the first now open in Sydney’s Pitt Street mall, with Brisbane and Melbourne following next year as part of the expansion plans. There’s also a haggle-free fixed-price online buying portal and the ‘Genesis To You’ valet service. The latter includes test-drive home delivery, concierge pick-up/delivery for scheduled servicing/warranty work with complimentary courtesy car, and convenient handover delivery for new purchases.
Completing the premium all-inclusive ownership experience is a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, five years/75,000km free scheduled servicing, five years 24/7 roadside assist, five years free map updates and a five-year subscription to Genesis Connected Services, plus two years complimentary access to Genesis Lifestyle Concierge and Global Privileges that includes travel and medical assistance.
The new G80 model is a substantial facelift of the original large sedan from 2014. There are two grades on offer, both sporting a responsive 3.8-litre alloy V6 engine good for 232kW and 397Nm and mated with an eight-speed auto delivering drive to the rear axle. Fuel consumption has reduced, but at 10.8 litres/100km remains a little thirsty.
The range starts at $68,990 for the handsomely-equipped G80 3.8, while those after an even bigger haul of goodies will be looking at the $88,900 G80 Ultimate. The optional Sport Design pack ($4000) provides sportier interior and exterior styling enhancements on either variant. A panoramic sunroof, standard on Ultimate, is a $3000 option for the entry model.
Safety hasn’t been forgotten with nine airbags and the suite of Genesis Active Safety Control plus an active bonnet-lift system to reduce pedestrian injury, standard on both models.
The G80 now features an Australian-specific suspension and steering tune and Adaptive Control Suspension. Dynamics are improved and the big sedan feels quite adept at negotiating a twisty road at pace, though not as sporty as the new and smaller G70 sedan (check out our story on the G70 too).
As befits a prestige offering, the spacious interior looks and feels pretty plush, albeit in a style likely to appeal to the more conservative and mature buyer.
