In the pits

Can these natural deodorant brands live up to the hype?

There are a lot of deodorants that claim their all-natural ingredients lists will keep you sweat and odour free.

Journalist Shannon Cook tested some of the most popular natural deodorants to see whether they live up to the hype.

KIND-LY Natural Deodorant

KIND-LY is all about helping users transition from traditional deodorants to an all-natural solution. They offer an armpit detox mask to be used with their natural deodorant to avoid any rashes from going cold turkey on traditional deodorant. The deodorant contains no aluminium, meaning it’s not an anti-perspirant, but its natural ingredients will keep your pits smelling fresh. It also comes in a range of scents to suit everyone.

Crystal Mineral Deodorant

Made from potassium alum, which claims to have antimicrobial properties, Crystal deodorant is available in a spray, roll-on or stone. Despite the easy application of a spray bottle and the modern packaging, crystal deodorant couldn’t quite hold up to a Queensland summer but it’s fine during winter. It comes in several different fragrances ranging from mild to strong, which is good for someone who’s sensitive to strong scents.

Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant Paste

Only stocked in a deodorant paste, Black Chicken is environmentally friendly and contains no potentially hazardous aluminium compounds. While the paste does a great job of keeping pits clean, application can be messy and rub off on clothes. If you don’t mind an interesting scent and applying a paste, then this one is a great alternative to traditional deodorants.

It is suitable for all skin types, however may cause a rash for those just coming off traditional deodorants. While the formula notably takes a while to dry the scent is refreshing and will keep you odour free in all but the warmest temperatures.
