Mitsubishi launches ASX 2020 model

Australia’s biggest selling small SUV comes in for a late-life upgrade.

Mitsubishi has added a more muscle and a sporty flair to its popular ASX range for 2020.

“We are introducing a new sport range with the GSR and MR,” Senior Manager for Product Strategy Owen Thompson said.

“The styling enhancements include the addition of dark alloy pedals and other trim changes.

" That, along with the more powerful engine in the GSR, will really capture the attention of customers who may have previously been in the market for a small sedan or hatch.”

Along with the range-topping Exceed (pictured), the GSR is one of two beneficiaries of a 2.4-litre MPI four-cylinder petrol engine. Power is up 12 percent (123kW vs 110kW) and torque 13 percent (222Nm vs 197Nm) on the carry-over 2.0-litre unit that motor-vates the rest of the range. The sole transmission is a CVT except for the base model ES which also offers a five-speed manual.

In a connection to its larger SUV siblings, Outlander and Eclipse Cross, the ASX continues the use of the Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield design, with black and chrome finishes added to the new-shape front bumper and grille. Additional styling, available on the GSR model, includes black cloth headlining, microsuede and leather-look seats with red stitching, and the addition of a sports rear spoiler. The Exceed boasts leather seats.

For handling and safety, Active Stability Control is standard across the range along with an electro-chromatic rear-view mirror and Forward Collision Mitigation, previously part of the ASX with ADAS package. The FCM system detects obstructions ahead and issues a visual and audible alert when there is a danger of a collision, automatically applying the brakes to either avoid a collision or reduce impact.

A new eight-inch smartphone display system, up from the previous seven-inch version, connects to a new infotainment system that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and DAB radio. The Exceed model also gains a Rockford Premium Audio system and TomTom navigation.

ASX ES customers can order the ADAS package for $2500 extra, with additional features, including lane departure warning, auto high beam, reverse sensors, blind spot warning, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert.

The new ASX retains its predecessor’s 393-litre cargo capacity.
