Sand Safari Arts Festival
A two-week fairy tale sandcastle festival on the Gold Coast.
Where can you find 270 tonnes of sand and 15 of the world’s best sand sculptors? The Surfers Paradise Sand Safari Arts Festival of course, where one sand sculptor will be crowned Australia’s Sand Sculpting Champion.
The theme this year is fairy tale classics so be prepared for sculptures of princess castles and Frozen references. The champion will be crowned on Sunday, 16 February at 5:30pm by an expert panel of sandcastle judges.
Punters will also get a chance to vote for their favourite to win the People’s Choice award with the winner announced on Saturday, 29 February.
For sandcastle amateurs, there will also be a range of interactive workshops and art installations suited to all age groups and levels of sandcastle expertise.
There will be something for art lovers too with art exhibitions, installations and sand sculpting demonstrations that will be sure to inspire your inner Picasso.
Fresh from their performance at VIVID Sydney 2019, designers Joseph Burgess and Joshua Wilkinson will bring their artwork, The Harp of the City, to Surfers Paradise for the festival. The work includes six hand crafted and fully functional instrumental harps along the beachfront to complement a family friendly interactive light show.
Local artist Clayton Blakes will also decorate Surfers Paradise beach with 500 electric blue migration soldier crabs to wow and delight audience.
Continuing the ocean theme, fellow local artist, Courtenay McCue will showcase a sea life-inspired light installation of tentacles in Cavill Mall.
Parents can also keep the kids entertained at the Storyfest pop-up beach library where they will be enchanted by fairy tale book readings, performances, games and live music.
