The all-new Jeep Gladiator ute in Australia
Limited numbers of the long-awaited Jeep Gladiator have arrived in local showrooms.
Step aside Toyota HiLux, out of the way Ford Ranger, the Jeep Gladiator has entered the Australian arena and thrown down a gauntlet to competitors.
Entering an already highly competitive ute market in Australia, Jeep believes the Gladiator will stand apart from competitors with claims that it is the only “convertible lifestyle truck” in the segment.
Available in Overland ($75,450 before on-road costs), Rubicon ($76,450 before on-roads) and an exclusive Launch Edition model ($86,450 before on-roads) which is limited to 100 units, the Gladiator, is priced at the higher end of the market.
While the price may be seen as steep, the Gladiator fills a void in size and price between the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger markets and the mammoth US segment including the Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
All of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator models are powered by a petrol 3.6-litre V6 (209kW and 347Nm) with an eight-speed automatic transmission and selectable four-wheel-drive system.
Entertainment-wise, all models come with Jeep’s 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen media interface with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a nine-speaker Alpine stereo, and two USB-A and three USB-C ports positioned through the cabin.
All model grades also come with LED headlights, under-rail bed lighting, integrated tie-downs, remote proximity keyless entry and a foldable windscreen.
Stylistically, the Gladiator shares many themes with Jeep’s Wrangler range, including the trademark removable roof and doors. But the Gladiator is a larger unit, sitting on a ladder frame chassis which is 462mm longer between the wheels and 787mm longer overall.
Protection under the Gladiator comes in the form of a heavy-gauge tubular steel rock rail designed to minimise impact damage and three skid plates to protect the transfer case, transmission oil pan and fuel tank.
All models come equipped with forward collision warning plus autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection rear camera with dynamic guidelines, adaptive cruise control and electronic stability control with roll mitigation.
Standard features on the base model Overland include McKinley leather seats (heated front) and steering wheel, 17-inch wheels on 225/75 R17 BF Goodrich 32-inch off-road tyres and body-colour hard top and fender flares.
The Rubicon features a black hard top roof and fender flares, forward-facing TrailCam off-road camera, selectable Tyre-Fill Alert, Selec-Speed control, traction control, transmission shift points, improved suspension articulation and travel courtesy of electronic sway-bar disconnect and an Off-Road+ drive mode to adjust throttle sensitivity.
The limited Launch Edition (only 100 available), which is based off the Rubicon model, features all optional equipment, including cargo management with trail rail system, lockable rear under seat storage bin, roll-up tonneau cover, spray-in bedliner, programmable auxiliary switches, 240-amp alternator, 700-amp maintenance-free battery and a removable wireless Bluetooth speaker.
Additionally, the highly sought-after model includes colour-matched wheel arch flares and hard top, black 17-inch alloy wheels, a Rubicon steel front bumper, exclusive tailgate badge and black leather trim seats (front heated) and steering wheel.
Jeep Australia Managing Director Kevin Flynn said prospective buyers would need to act fast to get their hands on a Gladiator.
“Thousands have indicated their interest in the Jeep Gladiator over the past few months and our Dealers are excited to add such a unique vehicle to their product line-up,” Mr Flynn said.
“The Gladiator builds on Jeep’s iconic character and renowned merits, creating the one-of-a-kind convertible truck with unparalleled 4x4 credentials.
“The past few months have been tough on Australians and with COVID-19 restrictions beginning to slightly ease, there is no better time to jump in your vehicle and explore what this beautiful country has to offer.”
