The best Halloween activities

Tips and tricks on ways to celebrate the spooky season.

The countdown is on until the spookiest day of the year, Halloween, on October 31.

While many Australians remain undecided about whether to celebrate Halloween, the famous American tradition has gained acceptance in recent years.

If you're keen to partake in this year's scary festivities, follow our list of helpful tips and tricks to make the most of your Halloween.

Costumes

You can't go trick-or-treating or celebrate Halloween without a costume. Whether you plan to DIY or purchase an outfit, your first task is deciding what to dress up as.

Depending on your budget, there a range of options available from standard kids costumes to elaborate ensembles at costume hire shops. If you intend to make your costume, try op shops and dollar stores for materials.

Decorations

If you want trick-or-treaters to visit your house for Halloween, you need to have it decorated. Decorations can be as simple as adding fake cobwebs, faux tombstones and creatures in the front yard or as extreme as creating your own haunted house.

A great DIY decoration is to create your own Jack-O'-Lantern. While pumpkins are traditionally used, the vegetable isn't well suited to Australia's warm climate so a great substitute is watermelon. Follow the video below for instructions on how to carve a watermelon. Don't forget to add glow sticks for an extra spooky touch.

Trick-or-treat

As not all Australians celebrate Halloween, a rule of thumb for trick-or-treaters is to only knock on the doors of houses with decorations. If you intend to trick-or-treat, return the favour and hand out lollies at your home. Choose lollies that are packaged individually for health and safety reasons.
