Tips for moving house
Moving house can be a nightmare if not well planned.
Moving into a new home can produce a combination of joy and fear, particularly if you are doing most of the heavy lifting yourself. But you can make moving day a breeze if you follow these tips.
Move on a weekday
Moving mid-week is cheaper, plus you’ll more than likely score a move date that is less busy than the weekend alternative.
Work smarter not harder
Place all the essential little things you need — TV remotes, legs for beds, phone chargers, Allen keys and any instructions for re-assembling your furniture — in a small box that is easy to access. Carry this box yourself, don’t let it go in the removal van.
Put aside the essentials
The same goes for food and drink essentials like tea, coffee, milk, toilet paper, medications and biscuits. Put the things you need the night before and the day of the move in a location that is easy to access, even when your house is full of cardboard boxes and removalists.
Do a trial run to ensure that the removal van can access your driveway at both your current home and new abode. Check if your furniture is going to fit through doors and up staircases. There’s nothing worse than carrying large piece of furniture to a front door and it won’t fit. Even worse if you have to quickly arrange a crane or a scissor lift for some of the bulky items. By measuring your new property before you move you’ll avoid surprises on moving day.
Reserve parking or space
Reserve a parking spot by either parking in it yourself beforehand, then moving when the removal van arrives, or placing some witches hats and a sign explaining the space is reserved for a removal van.
Cater for the removalists
While your moving team might have come prepared with a packed lunch – providing cold drinks, a slice of cake or even some pizza to help boost energy levels is always a great idea if you want to ensure your removalists are operating at peak levels.
Draft up a floor plan in advance
Map out a floor plan for your removalists to use. It will save you heavy lifting in the long run, particularly if they put bulky items in the wrong rooms or even on the wrong level of your home.
Moving day will inevitably be a little stressful. Keeping these tips in mind might just make it run a little smoother so you can settle in quickly.
