No matter the location, there’s nothing like hitting the open road and capturing unique photos of your travels.
But some photos have more of an impact on social media than others.
A study by TravelSupermarket into the most frequently used Instagram hashtags has revealed the top 10 most tagged road trip destinations.
1. Route 66, USA
Stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica, the 3900km journey has been featured on many road trip bucket lists and for good reason, with stunning views and more than 1.2 million tags on Instagram.

2. Great Ocean Road, Australia
Australia might not have taken out the top spot on the list, but it was close with the Great Ocean Road hashtag used more than a million times. The journey has been popular with travellers posting photos of sheer limestone cliffs, dairy farms and the ocean.
3. Ruta, Argentina
Ruta is Argentina’s longest highway, stretching 4989km and passing through 20 National Parks and 18 major rivers. The road trip was named one of Lonely Planet’s Most Epic Drives and was tagged 732,808 times on Instagram.
4. Blue Ridge Parkway, USA
The 750km journey weaves through North Carolina and Virginia, offering views of the southern and central Appalachians and was tagged 322,849 times. Travellers can also visit Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain peak on the eastern side of the United States.
5. Finger Lakes Highways, USA
Coming in fifth with 241,295 tags is the Finger Lakes highways located in central-west New York. The trip offers scenic lake views and is home to the region’s best wineries.
6. Valley of Fire Road, USA
Known for its weaving desert roads and 16,188 hectares of Aztec sandstone outcrops, the Nevada road trip has proven popular with Instagram users, being tagged 143,712 times.
7. Ring Road, Iceland
Completed in 1974, the road trip encircles Iceland and connects travellers to the most populated parts of the country. Also known as Route 1, the journey has grown in popularity and was tagged 104,374 times.
8. Trollstigen, Norway
Trollstigen, otherwise known as the Troll’s Ladder or Troll’s Path is a driver’s dream with twists and turns through 11 hairpin bends as it climbs up to Stigrøra. The road, which is more than 100 years old, is one of Norway’s most-visited attractions and was tagged 55,800 times on Instagram.

9. Icefields Parkway, Canada
The highest road in North America offers travellers plenty of pitstops with waterfalls, glacial lakes and vantage points including the Rockies’ along the way. The road trip was tagged 54,153 times on Instagram.
10. Cabot Trail, Canada
Despite coming in at number 10 with 51,562 tags, the Cabot Trail is one of Nova Scotia’s best-known activities. The Canadian road trip offers visitors a fantastic drive along winding roads and past serene lakes.
