The pros and cons of an overseas wedding

We’ve listed out some of the pros and cons of overseas weddings so you can make your special day one you’ll treasure forever.

Pros

  1. Cheaper ceremony costs with more choice.

There’s always fantastic deals on overseas weddings so you can save a lot by getting a bundle with flights, accommodation and ceremony in one. Also, if you’re open to different locations – you’ll have more choice so you can really find somewhere that fits your budget.
  2. Smaller guest list

Save on costs with a smaller guest list. You’ll have less catering, wedding favours and drinks to pay for so you’ll be able to spend on the things that really matter to the two of you.
  3. Marry and honeymoon together

You can combine your wedding and honeymoon together. This will extend out your holiday and you can even save you money by having them in the same place. Even better, all your loved ones are already there so you can all holiday together!
  4. Less stressful

You’re already in a relaxed mode, so overseas weddings tend to be less stressful with overseas coordinators doing much of the planning for you.
  5. Experience a new wedding culture

If you get married in a location with a different culture you can really enjoy customs we don’t have at home. You can try different food, listen to different music and really immerse yourself in their land of love.
  6. Location you love

If you’re getting married in a place that you hold dear, you’ll have a deeper connection to your wedding day. You’ll have a special place that means a lot to you both so you can enjoy return trips for years to come.

Cons

  1. Smaller ceremony

Overseas weddings tend to have fewer people. As you’ll be narrowing down your guest list you may really miss some people that could have attended at home.
  2. Legality

You may need to complete extra paperwork, or have a ceremony back home, for your marriage to be recognised in Australia.
  3. Planning

If you want a little more control, it can be difficult planning an overseas wedding and working with coordinators who usually organise it all for you.
  4. Additional costs for guests

Your guests will usually be the ones picking up the costs of their own travel and accommodation. This can be hard to put on those you love.
  5. It’s all new

When you’re getting married in a foreign land you may find it hard to find the right time to get married or to even understand their language, or customs. With different weather and climates – you may want to visit first so you know what to expect on your big day.
