Top motoring films

Four-wheel stars of the silver screen.

There’s no doubt that as motoring enthusiasts, we love our cars. To see them on the big screen, though, makes everything that much better. Here are our picks for the best motoring films of all time.

1. Duel (1971)

One of Steven Spielberg’s first films, Duel centres around lone travelling salesman David (Dennis Weaver) who is targeted by a terrifying truck during his commute. The thrilling cat and mouse chase is a simple idea but is as tense as it gets - imagine Jaws but on the open road.

2. Cars (2006)

When Cars was first released, it could be argued that more adults were excited than their kids. The story of Lightning McQueen has spawned multiple films, but the original remains the best. When McQueen winds up in the sleepy town of Radiator Springs, he must choose between stardom or his friends. It’s a classic kids movie with the perfect combination of cars.

3. Bullitt (1968)

If there’s one film that made its feature car just as famous as its lead actor, it’s Bullitt. Steve McQueen, ‘the King of Cool’, pilots the classic 1968 Ford Mustang GT in arguably the greatest chase scene in the history of cinema. Ford celebrated the film by releasing a special edition of its current 2019 model Mustang in the film’s iconic Highland Green paint job.

4. Christine (1983)

Who would have thought that horror and cars would ever come together? John Carpenter’s creepy flick follows the journey of young Arnie and his unhealthy car obsession with a Plymouth Fury named Christine. All goes well until the car starts killing people. It’s a surprisingly edgy film with a unique motoring perspective.

5. Mad Max Fury Road (2015)

George Miller’s dystopian series about the Australian ‘road warrior’ is an action-packed adventure ride. Somehow, 2015’s Fury Road managed to take things up a notch. Featuring some of the most unique and frankly wacky cars ever to grace the big screen, the film sees Max (Tom Hardy) take on the equally strange Immortan Joe in an all-out desert war.

6. The Italian Job (2003)

If you love the Mini Cooper, this film is the one for you. A remake of the 1969 original, the film follows a group of thieves as they attempt to recover stolen gold after being double-crossed. Their choice of getaway vehicle? A pack of colourful Mini Coopers.

7. The Fast and the Furious (2001)

When you think of cars in film, there is a good chance the Fast and Furious series comes to mind. This was the film to have a serious influence on the underground car scene and brought cult status to Japanese cars such as the Toyota Supra and the Nissan Skyline. In 2019 the series has spawned nine films and grossed more than $5 billion at the box office.

8. Talladega Nights (2006)

Will Ferrell stars in this comedy classic as Ricky Bobby, an all-star NASCAR driver with a serious passion for racing. He has it all until Formula 1 driver Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen) enters the scene and threatens his lead. It’s a funny film with all the great NASCAR action you could wish for.

9. Back to The Future (1985)

The DMC DeLorean was an unreliable and troublesome car until it featured in this major blockbuster, transforming it into one of the world’s most recognisable and iconic film vehicles. It can drive, it can fly and it can teleport back in time – what’s not to love?
