Urgent recall: Toyota RAV4 recalled over suspension fault
Australia’s top-selling SUV is undergoing a crucial recall for potential suspension faults.
Toyota Australia has issued an urgent recall on their top-selling SUV, the RAV4, following concerns the front lower suspension arms may fail.
The recall affects 1552 petrol and hybrid RAV4s with model codes AXAH54, AXAH52, MXAA52 and AXAA54 produced between 25 September 2019 and 17 October 2019.
Toyota Australia said there were concerns the lower suspension arms (which connect the body to the front wheels) may have been affected by improper production conditions.
If affected, Toyota Australia said over time cracks may form on the lower control arms. The cracks may also deteriorate further if the car is driven to rapid acceleration and deceleration.
Over its lifetime, the small cracks may also cause the lower suspension arm to separate from the wheel assembly.
If the control arm failed, Toyota Australia said it might result in a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash.
Toyota Australia is contacting owners of the affected vehicles by email, mail and text to notify them of the recall. The brand will also replace both front lower suspension arms with new parts free of charge.
It is understood the replacement of the faulty parts will take about three hours on each vehicle.
The recall comes after Toyota Australia was forced to recall more than 22,000 LandCruiser 70 vehicles earlier this month (1 May) due to an increased fire risk
The recall was instituted after it was discovered that vegetation may accumulate around the LandCruiser’s underbody and exhaust system and possibly catch fire.
RACQ Principal Technical Research John Ewing said it was “absolutely vital” people got the work done as soon as possible.
“It’s like any safety recall, they should never be ignored and always attended to as a matter of priority,” Mr Ewing said.
“Bottom line is, it costs manufacturers a lot of money to institute a safety recall, so there’s a good reason for doing it. They consider there is an issue that needs urgent rectification to maintain vehicle safety.”
