RACQ welcomes consensus on road user charge
The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) has welcomed news from the Economic Roundtable this week that the Federal Government will advance road user charging in consultation with the states.

The RACQ has been calling for a serious national discussion on transport tax reform for many years, most recently in its Federal Election Priorities document.
National reform is needed because the fuel excise is no longer fit for purpose.
While on one hand we have advocated for and support policies that incentivise low-emission vehicles, we have also called for a tax that is fair and equitable.
Right now, it is inequitable and unfair that people with the least amount of money and driving the oldest cars pay more for our roads than people with newer, low-emission electric vehicles.
We need a system where all road users contribute to the maintenance and upgrade of our roads.
While the fall in excise revenue is a slow burn, the big issue today is inequity. The move to eliminating fuel excise over time and introducing a fairer road tax system must start now.
RACQ understands that any new charge may progressively roll out across vehicle types, starting with electric vehicles, however we would hope to see the outdated and inefficient fuel excise eventually phased out.
RACQ would like to see design of a road user charge take account of a number of factors besides kilometres travelled to achieve multiple community benefits.
