Chinese carmaker Chery is edging closer to launching a second sub-brand in Australia, confirming details Lepas Australia’s first local model the L6 EV ahead of its October.

The Chery Group already counts Omoda-Jaecoo as part of its broader automotive ecosystem in Australia, with Lepas Australia set to add further to the brand’s footprint and sales tally.

Lepas Australia describes the L6 EV as a “sophisticated mid-size electric SUV” that combines “bold design, premium comfort and intelligent technology”.

The vehicle is based on a platform dubbed LEX developed specifically for Lepas and designed to support battery electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, as well as different vehicle sizes.

“The L6 is an important first step for (Lepas), offering a compelling combination of style, technology, comfort and EV performance in one of Australia’s most competitive vehicle segments,” said Lucas Harris, Chief Operating Officer, Lepas Australia.

The L6 features fairly conventional medium-SUV proportions, with notable design features including 19-inch machined-finish alloy wheels, distinctive LED front-end lighting, and a panoramic glass roof.

The contemporary-looking cabin boasts seating for five and an attractive mix of premium materials and technology-focused features, including an 8.88-inch LCD digital driver display and a 13.2-inch LCD infotainment touchscreen.

The touchscreen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus voice command, with other notable features including an eight-speaker Sony premium sound system, 50W wireless phone charger, heated and ventilated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof with powered sunshade, ambient lighting, and a powered tailgate.

A front-mounted electric motor sends 160kW/275Nm exclusively to the front wheels, while a 65kWh LFP battery delivers a claimed 440km driving range (WLTP).

Chery is among a number of Chinese brands that are surging up the Australian new car sales charts, with the brand notching up 34,889 sales in 2025, an increase of almost 177% on 2024, growing a further 46.6% as at July this year compared to the prior year.

When combined with sales of its Omoda-Jaecoo offshoot, the Chery Group was the fourth highest-selling automotive group in Australia during July 2026.
