Say what you will about Chinese car makers but one thing they can never be accused of is being boring, or lacking innovation.

A case in point is the new Deepal E07 Multitruck, a shape-shifting electric vehicle (EV) that converts from five-seat SUV to dual-cab ute at the press of a button.

First shown locally at the Melbourne motor show last April, the E07 Multitruck has now been confirmed for Australian sale with pricing starting from $64,900.

Deepal E07 a transformative multifunctional EV

Described by the importer as neither SUV nor ute but “a transformative multifunctional EV that fuses the refinement of a premium SUV with the utility of a work-ready Ute,” the E07’s party trick is its ability to switch from a load-hauling ute to a family SUV.

The 60/40 split rear seats allow longer items to pass through to the cabin while still in SUV mode, or they can fold completely flat.

Combined with a 131L front trunk (frunk) and 524L rear storage (1,654L with second row seats folded), the E07 offers generous cargo capacity.

The transformation from SUV to ute involves the rear glass dome sliding forward, the tailgate lowering, and the rear seats folding flat to accommodate cargo or passengers.

Oversized equipment can be carried with ease in this way, or the vehicle can be reconfigured into a flatbed-style utility space.

The transformation is controlled via switches in the boot space or the central infotainment screen and can be paused at any point.
The vehicle can also be driven with the rear window open, tailgate down, and sunroof or dome open, or in any combination of these configurations.

Stylistically, the E07 looks like a coupe-SUV in side profile with a slim LED strip running the width of the front fascia above an active lower grille that reduces wind resistance while supporting battery temperature management and efficiency.

Flush door handles and sharp creases in the lower door panels add to the clean, muscular aesthetic, with the E07 sitting on 21-inch, diamond-cut alloy wheels fitted with Michelin EV tyres.

Deepal E07’s comfort, safety and tech features

The interior features premium materials, advanced technology, and unusual Zero Gravity Seats, upholstered in supple Nappa leather.

The seats provide 14-way electric adjustment, heating, ventilation, massage functions, and memory settings.

At the centre of the cabin is a 15.4-inch rotating infotainment screen, which can switch between portrait and landscape orientation.

The display provides access to navigation, entertainment, and connectivity functions, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The E07 also features a head-up display, voice control, a premium audio system with eighteen internal and two external speakers, plus a wireless 50W ventilated phone-charging pad.

Rear-seat passengers benefit from multiple USB-C/ A outlets, generous storage compartments, and reclining seats.

The cabin can also transform into a flat sleeping space for extended trips, camping, or transporting large loads, with a Camping Mode function that manages cabin temperature and air filtration while resting.

With headrests removed, the front seats fold to meet the rear cushions, creating a platform large enough for a queen-size mattress.

The rear section can also fold flat with the electric partition, extending the load area to 1,865mm long by 1,100mm wide.

Safety looks comprehensive with eight-airbags including dual front, side, curtain, and rear passenger airbags, with the E07 also featuring a raft of active Safety and Driver Assistance, Intelligent Drive Assistance, and Parking Assistance technologies.

Among the E07’s numerous smart technologies is a Reverse Tracing Assist (RTA) feature, which memorises the last 50m of driving and can automatically retrace that path – ideal for navigating tight driveways or tricky off-road tracks.

Suspension adapts to road conditions

At the mechanical level, the E07 features an adaptive chassis system, combining double wishbone front suspension with independent multi-link rear suspension.

The suspension integrates Continuous Damping Control (CDC) with self- levelling air suspension to automatically adjust to changing road conditions, with four height settings including: low, medium, high and self-adaption.

The system offers elevated ride height of up to 223mm ground clearance in its highest mode, and the ability to wade through 600mm of water.

Deepal E07 options and pricing

The E07 will be offered in either single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual motor all-wheel drive configurations.

The entry-level Deepal E07 RWD costs $64,900 (MRLP) and is powered by a single electric motor delivering 252kW/365Nm of torque, delivering 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.7 seconds.

An 89.98kWh ternary lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery provides an impressive driving range of up to 550km (WLTP).

Stepping up to the range-topping AWD Performance variant costs $73,900 (MRLP) but brings dual electric motors delivering combined outputs of 440kW/645Nm, enabling a blistering 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.96 seconds.

The AWD Performance uses the same 89.98kWh NMC battery as its stablemate and despite its extra performance still manages an impressive driving range of up to 510km (WLTP).

Both models are based on 800V electrical architecture enabling ultra-fast DC charging of up to 240kW, which the manufacture claims will provide a 30-80% charge in about 15 minutes.

The E07 also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality up to 6.6kW, enabling owners to power appliances, tools, or campsite equipment, as well as Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) charging capability.

About the Deepal brand

If you’ve never heard of Deepal, you’re likely in good company as it’s among the new wave of Chinese brands that have recently established a presence in Australia.

The all-electric vehicle brand is owned by the Chinese Changan Automobile group, which appointed leading global automotive distributor Inchcape as its Australian distributor last October.

Inchcape is a well-established presence here and internationally, importing and distributing Subaru, Peugeot and Foton to Australia.

Deepal’s parent company, Changan Automobile, is one of the four major Chinese automobile groups, and claims to have 40 years of car manufacturing experience, with 12 manufacturing bases and 22 plants worldwide.

Changan’s self-owned brands include Deepal, Nevo, Avatr and the joint-venture brands Changan Ford, Changan Mazda and JMC.

The E07 is only the second model in the Deepal stable and joins the all-electric S07 medium SUV which has been on sale here since late 2024 and as at the end of August had sold only 155 units this year.
