GWM will introduce the Tank 500 Hi4-T plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) to the Australian market before the end of the year.
This new model expands the brand’s electrified portfolio and brings plug-in hybrid capability to its large SUV segment.
The Tank 500 Hi4-T builds on the existing Tank 500 platform, integrating GWM’s Hi4-T hybrid technology – a system designed to deliver both mechanical four-wheel drive and electric efficiency.
It will be the fourth PHEV released by GWM this year, following the H6GT, Cannon Alpha, and H6 plug-in variants.
Hybrid system overview
The Hi4-T system is GWM’s most advanced hybrid drivetrain, combining a turbocharged petrol engine with a high-output electric motor.
Unlike the Hi4 system used in lighter SUVs, Hi4-T retains a mechanical 4WD structure with up to three locking differentials, supporting off-road capability and towing performance.
The hybrid system operates in parallel, allowing the engine and motor to work together in real time.
This setup helps maintain engine efficiency while delivering consistent torque, particularly useful in low-speed or off-road conditions.
When charging is unavailable, the vehicle can operate solely on petrol power.
Drive modes include 2H, AWD, 4H Lock, and 4L Lock, along with eleven selectable terrain modes.
Powertrain and efficiency
The Tank 500 Hi4-T is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 120kW electric motor, producing a combined output of 300kW and 750Nm.
It uses a nine-speed hybrid automatic transmission (9HAT) and a torque-on-demand 4WD system.
Performance figures include:
- 0–100km/h in 6.9 seconds
- Combined fuel consumption of 2.1L/100km.
Battery and charging
A 37.1kWh ternary lithium battery provides up to 120km of electric-only range (NEDC) and a total driving range of about 950km.
Charging options include:
- 50kW DC fast charging (30–80% in 24 minutes)
- AC home charging (6.5 hours)
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability up to 6kW.
Off-road and towing capability
The Tank 500 Hi4-T retains the off-road features of its predecessor, including:
- 3,000kg braked towing capacity
- 213mm ground clearance
- 30° approach angle
- 22.5° breakover
- 24° departure angle
- 800mm wading depth.
Interior and technology
The seating configuration has been adjusted from seven to five to accommodate the battery, with added comfort features for second-row passengers, including heated, ventilated, and massaging seats.
A 7.0-inch rear touchscreen allows control over climate, media, and lighting.
Front cabin features include:
- 14.6-inch multi-touch display
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto
- Three-zone climate control
- LED ambient lighting
- Auto parking and reversing assistance.
Safety and support
Safety features include:
- Seven airbags
- Forward collision warning
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Lane keeping assist
- 360-degree camera
- Parking sensors (front and rear).
- The vehicle is covered under the GWM Care program, which includes:
- Seven-year/unlimited km warranty
- Eight-year/unlimited km battery warranty
- Seven years roadside assistance
- Seven years capped-price servicing.
Pricing details will be announced closer to launch.
