Mazda has introduced a cut-price version of its CX-60 medium SUV featuring a smaller four-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive and a sub-$45,000 price tag.

This places the CX-60 on a far more competitive footing in the medium SUV segment, dramatically undercutting the pricing of the previous entry-level CX-60 Evolve which boasts a 3.3-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine and all-wheel drive, and is priced at $60,800 (MRLP).

Available in a three-variant lineup comprising Pure, Evolve and Touring, all three of the new CX-60s are powered by Mazda’s tried-and-tested naturally-aspirated G25 petrol four-cylinder engine.

It’s the same engine found in other Mazda models sold locally including the CX-30, CX-5, and Mazda3, and delivers outputs of 138kW/250Nm of torque.

Drive is sent to rear wheels only via an eight-speed automatic transmission, with claimed fuel consumption of 7.5L/100km.

Prices for the new CX-60 variant start at $44,240 (MRLP) for the entry-grade G25 Pure, rising to $49,240 (MRLP) for the Evolve, and top out at $52,240 (MRLP) for the range-topping Touring.

Mazda is also promoting introductory driveaway pricing for the CX-60 G25 Pure model at $47,990.

Prior to the launch of the new lineup, the cheapest Mazda CX-60 was the 3.3-litre petrol all-wheel drive Evolve at $60,800 (MRLP).

This places the new G25 Pure a substantial $15,560 below that variant, with the G25 Evolve $19,560 cheaper than the 3.3-litre GT, and the G25 Touring $21,760 below the 3.3-litre Azami.

The new price points appear designed to broaden the appeal of the CX-60 range, which launched in 2023 as the first of a new wave of upmarket Mazda SUVs, including the CX-70 and CX-80, intended to elevate the brand’s positioning and compete with European prestige brands .

At launch, the CX-60 was positioned as a more expensive sports-luxury alternative to the existing CX-5 model, boasting an all-hybrid powerplant range comprising inline six-cylinder petrol and diesel mild hybrids, and a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid.

While the power and torque of the new non-hybrid four-cylinder petrol variants is well down on the turbocharged 3.3-litre inline petrol six with its outputs of 209kW/450Nm of torque, the pricing is clearly far more budget friendly and help get eh CX-60 on the shopping list of more buyers.
