New Mahindra Lifestyler pickup revealed

Mahindra has unveiled a new ute in its Indian home market, with Australia in line for a predicted 2027 launch.

Mahindra Australia is set to launch a new ute into the crowded Aussie dual cab ute segment following the unveiling of the brand’s new lifestyle load-lugger in Mumbai earlier this week.

Dubbed the Scorpio Lifestyler in its home market, the pickup will be launched as the Mahindra Lifestyler across international markets including Australia, where it is expected to debut in mid-2027.

The production vehicle’s design closely follows that of the Global Pik Up concept vehicle first shown in South Africa in August 2023, albeit toned-down for road-legal practicalities.

Designed at Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS) in Mumbai and developed at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai, the ute is designed to compete in the global midsize pickup segment against rivals including the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.

While the domestic Indian market is likely to be the ute’s primary focus, Mahindra is also targeting exports to what it calls “high-potential midsize lifestyle pickup segment” across Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, Africa, Middle East and Latin America.

Mahindra says its new ute is built on a new-generation body-on-frame architecture and has been designed as a global product capable of meeting diverse customer needs and market requirements.

The company describes the pickup as “combining bold exterior design, plush interiors and SUV-like comfort with unmistakable Mahindra toughness”.

In India, the Scorpio Lifestyler will be offered in three distinct variants – the Valley Edition, Reef Edition and the Trail Edition.

The interior features an attractive, modern layout with prominent portrait-oriented central touchscreen, a digital driver's display, and switchgear similar to the Scorpio SUV.

Power comes from a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel producing 122kW/400Nm and driving through either six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions, with rear-wheel drive (4x2) and electronic four-wheel drive (4x4) systems available.

Mahindra currently sells the Scorpio, SUV700 and XUV3XO SUVs in Australia, but doesn’t supply sales figures to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

The brand previously sold the Mahindra PikUp here, but the rugged budget-friendly 4x4 workhorse was discontinued in November 2022 following the introduction of new side-impact crash protection laws for light-commercial vehicles.
