Energy efficient tips to beat the heat

Home Energy
Follow these tips to reduce your energy costs in the summer months.

With summer just around the corner, it’s important for Queenslanders to be aware of what is consuming the most power in your home.

According to a recent RACQ survey, less Queenslanders are taking steps to reduce their energy bills during summer when compared to 2023, with many reverting to using air conditioning instead of fans and not closing shutters and windows to keep their house cool1.

With cooling and heating accounting for 14% of the average Queensland household’s electricity consumption, adopting energy efficient habits around the home can help reduce your costs2.

By being across your energy consumption and following these tips, you can avoid a bill surge in the warmer months.

Tips to save on your energy bill during summer

  • Use fans over air conditioning and make sure you close windows, curtains and doors to when cooling a particular room
  • Set your air conditioner to 25 degrees for maximum efficiency when cooling your home
  • If you have a ducted air conditioning system, set it to only cool the rooms you are using
  • Opt for reflective blinds or awnings outside windows that are more susceptible to heat
  • Seal gaps around doors and windows to prevent air from escaping when you are cooling your home
  • Where possible, consider the most energy efficient models for appliances like air conditioning units

Aside from following these tips, installing solar panels and a home battery remains a compelling offer to reduce energy costs for Queenslanders.

There are a range of benefits for installing solar and a home battery, with the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program and small-scale renewable energy systems program making it more accessible for households.
